Career Changer's Lab — build the machine you'll learn on

Build the machine you are going to learn on, from a laptop that currently has nothing on it. A hypervisor, a Kali virtual machine, snapshots, Linux from the ground up, and a written procedure for rebuilding all of it from nothing. Lab construction and fundamentals only — nothing here teaches you to attack anything.

Career Changer's Lab — build the machine you'll learn on

課程簡介

Nobody learns security by reading about it. You need a machine you are allowed to break, and you need it to be a machine that cannot reach anything that matters. That is what you build here. It starts with one line in Task Manager, because if that line says the wrong thing then nothing else in this segment will work and no amount of reinstalling will help. Then a hypervisor, then Kali from an installation image with a Debian 13 profile, twenty-five gigabytes and guided partitioning, a password you set yourself, and a first snapshot before you touch anything. One of the early lessons is designed to fail. If you are on an Apple Silicon laptop you will download the wrong image, build a machine from it, and get "no bootable device found" — and then learn to check what your own machine is before you download anything, which is a habit that comes back twice more in this segment and will come back for the rest of your career. A career changer from journalism lost a full lesson to exactly that. Then Linux, for somebody who has never used it. What a virtual machine actually is. Why installing Linux next to Windows hurts, and what a bootloader has to do with it. Why GNOME and KDE are not Linux. Where files live, where software comes from, who is allowed to read what, and how to find out what the machine did while you were not looking. It ends the way it ended for her: with a machine lost entirely, and the rebuild turned into the lesson. You back the machine up somewhere that is not your laptop, then rebuild it from your own notes with the browser closed, and time both. Then you write the scripts that take a change back out, and the runbook that means none of this is in your head. You finish with your own machine, your own snapshot discipline, and one document from which a stranger could rebuild the whole thing. Every lab carries the same standing rules, and they are not decoration: permission first, respect scope, never production, always staging.

  2. 02 Building It
    3 堂課程·1h 37m

You are declining the easy install on purpose. The wizard makes five decisions for you that you will be asked to defend in an interview, and watching the questions go past once is the difference…

  3. 03 Living In It
    3 堂課程·1h 42m

Everything in this module is inspection — read-only commands that change nothing — which is also a fair description of a first month in an operations role. Take a snapshot before each lesson. The one…

  4. 04 Losing It, and Getting It Back
    3 堂課程·2h 17m

A snapshot protects you from a change. A backup protects you from the machine ceasing to exist, and the snapshots live in the same folder as the machine, so they go with it. You will back the machine…

Am I Too Late? — The Honest Map Into Cyber
Beginner Am I Too Late? — The Honest Map Into Cyber The four questions people actually ask before they book: is forty too late, do I need to code, what do I need before I start, and which certificate. Answered plainly, with a role map, real first-year pay, and a written plan you leave with.
The Kid Who Wants To Hack
Intermediate The Kid Who Wants To Hack You want to know how attacks work. Fine. This segment teaches you to see them — in a domain record, in a DNS lookup, in a log file — and to build a tool that scores a link before anyone clicks it. Nothing here teaches you to attack anything, and by the end you will understand why that is the expensive skill.
SOC Tier 1 — the job, done from the ticket in
Intermediate SOC Tier 1 — the job, done from the ticket in Six tickets, handed to you cold, in the order and the format a real shift hands them over. You decide what matters first and then defend the decision. Analysis and defence only — nothing here teaches you to attack anything.
Beginner The CV and the Application One page, built for somebody entering security without a security job history. Six adverts read line by line, the artefact put where a job history would go, the write-up marked, and the funnel tracked honestly — including what sixty rejections do and do not tell you.
Intermediate The Security Interview Four rooms, each testing something different. What the recruiter screen is actually filtering, and the salary range asked before anything else. The technical bank, with a model answer and the reason it works. Five scenario questions marked the way a hiring manager marks them. Then the panel, the questions you ask them, and the debrief you write the same evening.
